Authorities mentioned they were contacted by a man who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored substance

Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.

Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Police then found numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Officials report preliminary tests show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.

A senior political figure commented the incident rendered him without words and had to be solved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
