Pentagon Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question included details about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released later this week.
