New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
